The Highs and Lows of Recruiting

I’ve been told by a few people that they never would want to have my job…and that’s fair. Recruiting is most definitely not for everyone. If you are going into the field of staffing you need to be competitive, driven, and unafraid of hearing the word "no" when you call someone for a job that they would be perfect for, and they just aren’t interested.

Resilience is required in this work because the hardest, yet most fun part of recruiting is the roller coaster ride that it is.

As a recruiter, you will have some great days. You will connect with some great job seekers on new roles, have candidates nail interviews, and you will make deals! There is no better feeling than when a candidate calls you and thanks you for helping them get their new job, telling you how big of a difference you made for their family, and how it was a pleasure to work with you. When recruiting is done properly, time is taken to forge relationships and network, resulting in a positive change in someone’s life. Those are the highs, the top point of the roller coaster ride.

Then you will have those days, where the cart is just tipping off of that top peak and things go downward. Earlier in my career, I had days when candidates accepted our client’s offer, just to call back and say, “Hey I changed my mind”.  I’ve put all my work into getting resumes submitted, only to find out that the client just put the job on hold. Those are the lows. Those are the days where you question why you work so hard.

Throughout all of this, the best recruiters remember that without the lows of staffing, you can never appreciate the highs. Yes, sometimes we get a bad rep. Yes, sometimes people say we are annoying; at the end of it all, recruiters make a difference in people’s lives for the better.

When you can take a step back and reflect on your work, that is the part of the roller coaster ride when everything is slowing down, and you come to that stop. You catch your breath…it was a crazy ride, but you know that you are going to hop right back in line and do it all over again.
