The recent hacks in the news have been more than troublesome for a multitude of reasons and most companies find themselves scrambling to react. If you're one of the companies that staffs smarter, you had already anticipated these attacks and have been proactive in supplying talent to meet these needs. For those of you that have a reactive plan in place, as opposed to a proactive one, there is something to learn from these attacks. Your company may have dodged a bullet this time, but there is still a lot of risk in staying reactive.

Let's Examine the Facts

This attack was planned with a focus on large institutions that did not keep up with their technology's system updates. Those who did not pay attention to this part of security upkeep were very vulnerable to hacks and suffered greatly. The full effect of this attack will be seen throughout this week as further inventory is taken of missing data. So far, it is reported that 200,000 computer in more than 150 countries have been affected. This all began when hackers decided to exploit a flaw in Microsoft's Windows operating system. This flaw was first discovered by the NSA and the findings, along wih malicious software, were made public in April by a hacker collective called Shadow Brokers. This escalated into a ransomeware known as WannaCry and a ransom of $300 in Bitcoin was required to restore access.

How Did the Cyber Attack Stop

The attackers had a "kill switch" included in their attack and all it took to stop the attack was to register a domain name. Once a 22-year-old British researcher accidentally found this out, the attack was shut down and he single-handedly stopped the ransomware from fully spreading to the United States. However, it is possible that the attackers could create a similar hack with a different domain name, so constant vigilance is necessary for all. This can happen again at any time and the next time it does, it pays to be prepared for the worst.
