In astronomy, an eclipse occurs when one celestial body passes directly in front of the other--such as when the moon eclipses the sun and much or all of the sun’s light is blocked during daylight hours. When your company’s productivity becomes eclipsed (or blocked) by something like a gap in talent, it can lead to disaster for your firm--problems begin occurring from bottom to top. It is important to catch this concern before it turns into something insurmountable. We’ve put together a few things you should be looking for; make sure you don’t have blinders that prevent you from noticing these less-than-desirable traits in your business.

Frequent Fire Drills

A “fire drill” occurs when your employees find themselves on high alert, working long hours and trying to get caught up with the task at hand. Usually, it is because they cannot meet a project deadline. Project lag, even if it doesn’t lead to missed deadlines, isn’t a good thing for any business. After all, no one can do their best work if they are rushed. Being on alert for these fire drill situations and staffing accordingly is essential. For many industries, adding staff during the busier months may be necessary.

Lack of Innovation

Companies who have a gap in talent will still usually get things done--in the best way possible. However, the workload prevents your employees from innovating and coming up with new ideas that help your company grow. Lack of innovation is deadly in a world where technology is always changing, and the competition is always growing. Not only do employee who have smaller workloads have time to innovate, but adding new “blood” to the workforce give you different knowledge and expertise, but it may also inspire everyone currently on staff to come up with new ideas too.

Loss of Morale (and Overworked Employees)

Are your employees happy? Sure, they like having a job, but do they feel like you “get” them? Overworked employees will often have lower morale, become less productive and may not be able to succeed in their jobs. Adding just one or two support staff members could make all the difference--allowing your employees to take vacation time as well as to achieve more during the hours they are on the clock. When your employees are well-rested and accomplishing more at work, morale will grow.

Losing Your Competitive Advantage

What sets your firm apart from the competition? What’s your competitive advantage? If you have trouble answering this question, it could signify that you need additional staff to work in research, development or marketing. Companies that struggle with achieving or maintaining a competitive advantage are often the same ones who have overworked staff or gaps in talent.

Year to Year Growth is Abysmal

While you may not notice anything small on a day-to-day basis, what about changes that have happened year-to-year? Is your firm growing? Are numbers up? A company that has little or no year-to-year growth may be experiencing talent gaps. After all, it may be challenging for your staff to grow the business as they deal with the minutiae.
